Metal surfaces that are exposed to weather or water will eventually begin to rust and corrode. The type of metal can affect the corrosion process, but there are things you can do to slow it, like using rust prevention oils to coat the surface and protect the material.

Rust Prevention

Preventing rust on metal structures and parts is more than just cosmetic. Rust can damage moving parts and cause deterioration of structures over time that can eventually lead to failure of the metal. There are multiple ways to protect metal, but rust prevention oils are an effective solution for many different situations.

While oil can be messy to work with, when applied right, it can make a significant difference in the life span of the metal and does not have to be messy to work with. Some oils available go on in very light coats so that the surface may darken, but the oil will not get on everything that touches the metal.

Because oil is also a lubricant, it can do double duty as a rust preventative and a lubricant inside engines or on exposed mechanical assembles. The oil used will affect how well it does both jobs, so you need to look for rust prevention oils that specifically indicate you can use them both ways.

Applying Oil

The application for which the rest prevention oils are being used will also play a role in how the oil is applied to the metal. In some cases, brushing it on is an excellent way to ensure that you get a good even coat of oil in all the places it needs to be, and other oils may benefit from being sprayed onto surfaces in an extremely light mist to just coat the surface lightly.

Check the rust prevention oil you are using to ensure it can be applied using the method you need and will work properly. Some oils are heavier than others, so spraying them through an air-powered spray gun may not work well, and the gun may clog easily. In these cases, you may have the option to use a mechanical sprayer with a larger tip on it, but keep in mind the flow rate will be different, so you could end up with a heavier coat of oil that you need.

The manufacturer will often recommend a method for application, so buying rust prevention oils that are well suited to the situation and the environment is often the most straightforward solution and will yield the best long-term results. It is also essential to consult the distributor to determine how often the oil will need reapplication. On larger items, recoating the surfaces can take some time and may not be the best solution for the situation.
