If you use utility carts or other rolling carts inside your warehouse, you might not think much about them until they don't roll well or seem to roll away too fast. However, with the use of the following tips, you can keep your carts under control so that you can continue focusing on other tasks.
Utilize Brakes
When you purchase your carts or the steel casters that sit underneath them, you may have thought that they could be stopped manually and there was no need to outfit them with brakes. However, if you have loaded the carts and are unloading items, the cart may start to move slowly as you move things. To stop that, brakes are imperative. You can install brakes on the steel casters to stop the cart and keep it in place when you need it to be still.
Use Traction Tape
If your carts are unruly and seem to sail across the warehouse floor with little nudging from you or employees, another solution is to get rubber traction tape. By applying the tape over each wheel, the cart will move more slowly and become easier for you to stop before sliding all over the place.
Stop Overloading Carts
Overloading your cart can not only strain the cart itself, but it can also cause undue strain on the steel casters, wheels, and other components. It is imperative that you track down load limits (usually from the manufacturer's website) and respect them. While it might seem quicker to overload a cart in order to move things around more quickly, if the steel casters become bent or another problem arises because of overloading, that cart will be out of commission. It will be harder to get things done, and you may experience work delays until you repair the rolling cart or replace it.
Consider Larger Wheels
If you find that your rolling carts require a lot of effort to keep them going, the problem could be the wheels underneath them. Tiny wheels don't have much surface area and generally require a bigger push to get moving. If that becomes a problem for you, consider switching out the steel casters and wheels for larger models. Larger wheels will require less effort to get in motion.
